🩺 How It Started
The Break Room, a Bottle of Vodka, and the Beginning of Unbound
Dr. Allen and I met vanquishing evil.
Not the Marvel kind — the quiet, institutional kind.
The kind that recruits high-integrity clinicians, dangles leadership titles, and then retaliates the minute they actually do their jobs.
(GASP. The audacity.)
On my first day, my office mate — another RN — pulled me aside:
“Be careful what you say to management.”
Eight employees had just quit without notice the week before.
I knew what that meant.
But like most nurses, I didn’t have the luxury of quitting back.
So I tried to be chill.
Keep my head down.
Not stir the pot.
That lasted exactly until they asked me for a doctor’s note to use my own PTO.
Yes. You read that correctly.
In 2023.
You cannot make this sh*t up.
Within two months — with no attorney, just excellent documentation and righteous refusal — I got the policy shut down.
Nurses and medical assistants no longer had to submit proof-of-illness to access time off they had already earned.
A cease-and-desist went out to my department leadership.
My old manager’s eye started twitching.
And just like that — I was the problem.
Enter: Dr. Sara Allen.
Freshly recruited as the new medical director.
Fresh off a leadership role at one of the largest physician-owned clinics in Ohio.
Brilliant, strategic, and still under the impression this place wanted actual leadership from someone with integrity.
I had googled her once or twice — trying to find her email.
I was going to warn her not to take the job.
I even drafted the message. A diplomatic red flag wrapped in professional courtesy.
Wrote it. Reread it.
Never sent it.
Instead, she found me.
In the break room. On my last day.
“Hi, I’m Dr. Allen, the new medical director. What do you do here?”
“Hi, I’m Amy, the RN Care Manager. I don’t do anything here anymore. Today’s my last day.”
“Oh really? Why’s that?”
“Do you have a few hours and a bottle of vodka?”
“Sure. Meet me in my office at 2.”
And that was the beginning of Unbound Direct Health.
Two women in healthcare — one doctor, one nurse — both done with the gaslight-gatekeep-comply cycle.
Done watching systems punish integrity and reward obedience.
Done explaining that care should actually feel like care.
So we built something different.
Something relational. Transparent. Human.
Something that doesn’t require a prior authorization for your soul.
⚡️ Fast-Forward to Now:
A few years.
A few spreadsheets.
Too many sleepless nights.
Several miracles.
And a handful of existential crises that could’ve been billed as group therapy.
We did the unthinkable:
We built our own system.
Unbound Direct Health grew out of that break-room conversation — part rebellion, part refuge, part “F*ck this, let’s do better.”
No patients turned into billing codes.
No spreadsheet sorcery to hit corporate KPIs.
No soulless scripts pretending to be care.
Just two clinicians and a team of women building a clinic where healthcare actually supports health.
Where being human is part of the treatment plan.
And now we’re throwing a party.
